Materials Donations

Donations to the library are subject to the criteria in the library’s Collection Development Policy.

What materials do we accept?

  • Books and DVDs that are clean, free of mildew and are in good condition.
  • Books with a copyright date within 10 years.
  • Up to 10 books or DVDs at one time.

What materials are not accepted?

Due to limited staff time, resources, and space, we are unable to accept:

  • Damaged and soiled materials
  • Books with a copyright date older than 10 years
  • Magazines or journals
  • Audio cassettes, VHS Tapes, records/vinyl, and computer software
  • Reader’s Digest Condensed and Time-Life books
  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • Textbooks, procedural law books or government documents
  • Unsellable editions (unbound books, not-for-sale copies)

Where else might I donate my items?

  • Little Free Libraries
  • Somerset Schools’ Books & Benches program
  • Goodwill (Stillwater, Hudson, New Richmond)
  • Adoray’s Treasures from the Heart (Osceola)

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Your contribution is tax deductible. Per state statute, the library cannot value items you donate. You will need to determine the value of your donation yourself. All donations accepted become the property of the library and will be utilized in the manner deemed most appropriate by the library staff and Friends of the Library.

Donation receipts can be requested at the front desk of the library.
