.3D Printing Policy

Purpose

The library’s 3D printer is a tool for exploration, learning, and invention. By offering access to this technology, we aim to reduce barriers to innovation and empower all members of our community to engage with tools that are shaping the future. This service reflects our commitment to equitable access and supports lifelong learning through hands-on experiences.

Eligibility and Access

The 3D printer is available to community members who have completed a library-approved certification process. Certified users may book time to operate the printer under staff supervision during scheduled Open Maker Space Time.

  • Patrons must be 14 years or older to become certified.
  • Children under 14 may not be certified but may use the printer under the direct supervision of a certified parent or guardian.
  • All use of the 3D printer must comply with the Terms of Use outlined below.

Certification Process

To gain access to the printer, patrons must:

  1. Attend a library-facilitated 3D printing orientation and training session.
  2. Demonstrate basic proficiency in preparing print files and safely operating the printer.
  3. Sign a User Agreement acknowledging understanding of the library’s safety, cost, and conduct policies.

Supervised Use of the Printer

Certified users may reserve time to use the printer during scheduled open maker space time. Independent use outside of staff-supervised hours is not permitted.

Cost for Printing

The library does not charge for the use of the printer, only the cost of the filament used.

The 3D Printer software will identify the cost prior to printing, and the amount charged will be rounded up to the nearest $1.

Terms of Use

  • Monthly Limits: Certified users may print up to 6 hours per month, regardless of file type or purpose. Requests for additional time to support educational or entrepreneurial use may be approved on a case-by-case basis.
  • Print Pickup: Completed prints must be picked up within 7 days. After that, prints may be discarded.
  • Finishing Responsibility: Users are responsible for removing support structures, brims, and any post-processing of their prints.
  • Lawful and Ethical Use: All designs must comply with copyright laws and be for lawful purposes. The following are prohibited: weapons or weapon components, obscene or pornographic content, or any item prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
  • Right to Refuse Use: Library staff reserve the right to suspend access or deny a print request at their discretion for violations of this policy or for any safety concerns.
